Among its many accolades Deerfield Academy, the 4-year college preparatory boarding school in Deerfield, Massachusetts, is being recognized for its commitment to training the next generation of leaders as environmental stewards.
Sustainability is such a high priority that it has been incorporated into the Academy's strategic plan and adopted by the Trustees. The recently completed Koch Science Center became Deerfield's first LEED certified building. As efforts to green the campus have continued, the primary focus has been on reducing energy consumed in buildings and engaging students in meaningful ways with the work of campus sustainability.
For the past three years Deerfield has hosted a Green Cup Challenge, a month-long electricity reduction competition using Lucid's Building Dashboard. Building Dashboard has also become an integral part of the math and science curriculum, enabling new classroom exercises and research projects that make it possible for students to interact with information about their own buildings.

Featuring some of the leading colleges and universities from British Columbia, "Do It In the Dark" Energy Reduction Competition engaged thousands of students in conservation behavior. The three-week competition successfully leveraged social networking sites, and many schools offered prizes to building residents who shared their commitments to conserve energy on Facebook or Twitter.
The competition was organized around and continually monitored using Lucid's Building Dashboard® platform, which allowed participating buildings to instantly compare performance, share winning strategies and track current standings as the competition progressed. BC schools have demonstrated that providing building occupants with intuitive feedback on their electricity consumption, rewards or incentives, and a meaningful social context and competitive environment can result in significant resource use reductions in buildings.

For DPR Construction, sustainability is a core value that is embodied in every aspect of their business. DPR's recently completed office in San Diego has continued to push the envelope: the company's first Net Zero Energy office, which is expected to earn LEED® Platinum certification. The San Diego office has a multifaceted approach to saving energy that involves everyone in the company -- and a key part of that approach is using Building Dashboard® to monitor and display resource consumption.
Since its opening DPR staff have been tasked with ensuring that the office produces more energy than it consumes, which means constantly trying to find ways reduce consumption. In addition to engaging employees and helping staff manage ongoing building performance, DPR is using Building Dashboard to communicate their commitment to sustainability inside and outside the office.
Since the completion of their Sustainability Master Plan in 2007, Elon has made resource conservation a key goal. Building Dashboard tracks and displays resource use in 54 of the 72 buildings on campus, making visible for the first time the environmental footprint of the buildings in which students learn and live. Elon uses Building Dashboard in conjunction with other technologies and creative programs to meet their sustainability goals, which span operations, curriculum, student life and facilities.
Every school is unique, but the challenges of sustainability have raised some common questions on college and university campuses. How do we use buildings as a teaching tool? How can we engage students and staff to foster behavior change and promote conservation? How can we communicate our long-term sustainability goals in ways that motivate collective action?
Hamilton College has a history of leadership in sustainability. Most recently, the college completed a climate action plan that sets an ambitious target of reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 50% by 2020. To meet this goal, Hamilton is focusing on improving building efficiency on campus and developing strategies to address behavior patterns and promote conservation. A key element is using Building Dashboard to monitor, visualize and contextualize resource use.
Changing the behavior of building occupants is a component of Hamilton's conservation efforts that offers valuable educational opportunities in addition to environmental and economic benefits. Hamilton has real-time resource use monitoring in 11 residence halls, the LEED® Gold Kirner-Johnson humanities building, Unified Science Center, an Outdoor Leadership Center and five other campus facilities.
