Lucid Design Group announces energy conservation competition for universities
August 28, 2008
Oakland, CA - Lucid Design Group announced today a national competition that encourages energy conservation on college campuses. Lucid will award its Building Dashboard® to a U.S. or Canadian college or university whose student-led team submits the best YouTube video demonstrating a creative initiative that engages people to conserve energy and resources and shows how a Building Dashboard® would benefit those efforts.
Building Dashboard® is currently being used by Oberlin College, Harvard, Yahoo! Inc. and many other universities, colleges and businesses to track energy consumption in their buildings. Lucid's technology motivates and empowers building occupants to manage their consumption and conserve resources, and allows them to equate their reductions in terms of dollars and carbon dioxide not emitted into the atmosphere.
Real-time information feedback provided by Building Dashboard® has been shown to facilitate reductions of energy consumption in buildings of 10 to 56 percent by promoting simple behavior changes, such as turning off unused lights and appliances.
"Lucid Design Group operates with the premise that real-time feedback on energy consumption is a necessary and effective mechanism to change attitudes and behavior, and ultimately conserve resources," said Michael Murray, co-founder and president. "It’s very encouraging to see that institutions of higher education are at the forefront of the environmental stewardship movement, initiating a wide range of campus sustainability programs. Our goal is to provide a tool that enables conservation on a broader scale by engaging people in creative behavior-change programs."
The student team that wins Lucid's energy conservation competition will be awarded a Building Dashboard® for up to three buildings on their campus. The dashboard can be used to launch real-time energy competitions among residence halls or in other campus buildings and can serve as an important data-gathering tool for tracking university sustainability efforts over time.
Student contestants should submit a YouTube video of between three and ten minutes that introduces an innovative program for promoting conservation behaviors among students, faculty and staff, and how their college or university would utilize the Building Dashboard® in their effort. The winner will be announced at the Greenbuild 2008 International Conference & Expo in Boston on November 19, 2008. Complete entries must be submitted by October 24.
Beyond primary and secondary schools and institutions of higher education, Building Dashboard® is used by Fortune 500 companies and non-profit organizations alike to motivate employees to achieve energy reduction goals, showcase the performance of green building features such as solar photovoltaic systems, and publicly demonstrate the commitment many forward-looking organizations have made to environmental stewardship.
