Lucid Design Group, Alliance to Save Energy and National Wildlife Federation announce Campus Conservation Nationals

October 5, 2010

Oakland, CA - The Alliance to Save Energy in partnership with Lucid Design Group and the National Wildlife Federation today announced the launch of Campus Conservation Nationals 2010, the first real-time, nationwide electricity and water use reduction competition. Starting November 1st, forty colleges and universities will compete to achieve the greatest reductions in their residence halls over a 3-week period.

Using Lucid’s Building Dashboard®, participating schools will be able to instantly compare performance, share winning strategies and track standings among the leading schools and buildings. Campus Conservation Nationals leverages the momentum of popular dorm energy competitions and extends the playing field to include rival institutions from across the country.

Research has shown that feedback on electricity and water consumption, combined with competitive spirit and incentives, can result in significant resource use reductions in buildings.

Campus Conservation Nationals 2010 features some of the leading colleges and universities from across North America. Participants include:

American University

An exciting prize package will be awarded to students on the winning campus and in the winning residence halls. This year's prizes are being provided by a number of generous sponsors.

Lucid Design Group will award Building Dashboard for 2 buildings to the winning campus, enabling students to view, compare and share building resource use data, track budgets, host real-time competitions and communicate sustainability efforts to the campus community.

U.S. Green Building Council will award access to Green Building Basics and LEED Online course, USGBC hooded sweatshirts and reusable USGBC shopping bags. Study Like A Champion will award SLAC hooded sweatshirts and t-shirts, and sweatband packs. Lights Out Green In will award 200 compact fluorescent lightbulbs and Lights Out Green In sweatbands and t-shirts.

On residential college and university campuses, activities that take place in buildings account for the majority of energy use, water use and total greenhouse gas emissions. While most schools recognize the value of upgrading infrastructure to maximize efficiency, changing the behavior of building occupants is also recognized as a critical component of conservation.

This first-of-its-kind resource reduction competition offers valuable educational opportunities, such as enabling students to teach themselves conservation behaviors, as well as environmental and economic benefits. Above all, Campus Conservation Nationals is designed to empower the future generation of energy and environmental leaders, and foster a culture of conservation within campus communities.
