University of Missouri Building Dashboard® featured on KOMU-TV

Columbia, MO - Student residents at University of Missouri will benefit from Building Dashboard® this spring, as the system is rolled out to select residence halls, as reported by KOMU-TV8. From the article:
"MU students are adding a sustainable theme and getting an instant answer to how much energy they consume. After the efforts of one student, others can now easily see how leaving the television on all day can sure add up.
"MU awarded Ben Datema a $25,000 grant to implement the energy-monitoring program. The senior thought of the idea through his work with Sustain Mizzou.
"'Building Dashboard is a real time energy usage monitoring system, Datema said. We're hoping to market it and have it in front of everyone so much that it makes a big impact on the energy usage in these residential halls. That results in environmental benefits, cost savings, but also to educate people in residential halls about energy consumption in particular and wider sustainable issues and get them to think about the environment.
"... Studies have shown that when users see how much energy they're using, they have a number they can attach to it, they're typical reaction is to reduce their energy consumption,' Datema said.
"Director of Residential Life Frankie Minor is excited about educating students on the energy they consume.
"'The biggest thing we're looking for is awareness and education and a down side of living on campus is that the students don't pay the utility bill directly, they pay it in-directly through the room rate, so they don't have a good understanding of how much utilities their actually using,' Minor said.
"... Hopefully now we can re-direct them (students) to see how much they're spending on utilities and how simple things like turning off the lights, turning off the stereo, turning off the TV can help save money for themselves and because it's the right thing to do,' Minor said.
